Police investigating car fires in Canberra overnight

Police are investigating after a number of cars and a tree were set on fire in Canberra’s inner north last night, 28 May.

Between 9:30 pm and 11:30 pm, firefighters and police were responded to three separate car fires and a tree fire in Braddon, Reid, and Ainslie.

  • About 9.30pm a tree was set on fire near the intersection of Drake Street and Higgins Crescent, Ainslie.   
  • About 9.45pm a silver Volkswagen was set on fire in Doonkuna Street, Braddon. 
  • About 10.00pm a second silver Volkswagen was set on fire on Amaroo Street, Reid near St John’s Church. 
  • About 10.25pm a silver Ford Focus was set alight on Constitution Avenue, Reid near CIT.  

Witnesses reported seeing a person on a motorbike leaving each of the incidents.  

ACT Policing is asking residents in Reid, Braddon and Ainslie to check CCTV footage and dashcams from between 9.30pm and 10.30pm last night for footage of suspicious persons or a motorbike.  

ACT Policing believe the fires are linked and suspicious. They are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to contact police.
