Blanche, the tragic protagonist of Tennessee Williams’ play, grew up on a plantation called Belle Reve. Throughout her childhood, Blanche has been accustomed to gentility and wealth.
The estate’s wealth has evaporated, her loved ones have died off, she has lost her youthful beauty and her reputation is in tatters.
Blanche’s brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski thinks of his small apartment as his kingdom. Stanley does not want Blanche’s fantasy world to encroach upon his domain.
