Applications are open for the ACT Teacher Scholarships program, a government grant for ACT public school teachers and school leaders to undertake further education, training and research.

Each year, teachers and school leaders can study one of three streams of teacher scholarships – Priority Area, Master of Education (University of Canberra), and Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship).

Priority Area Scholarships provide up to $10,000 for study related to students with complex needs and challenging behaviours, languages, STEM subjects, and a range of other educational qualifications with a link to the ACT Government’s Future of Education Strategy.

The Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship) Scholarship provides up to $22,000 to study at the university of the recipient’s choice and to earn a Masters degree. 

The Master of Education (University of Canberra) Scholarship provides fully-funded access to a Masters degree designed for teachers to use intensive study periods during the school holidays.

Jamie Walkden, a scholarship recipient who teaches at Harrison School, said: “Being able to connect with other teachers from across the Directorate was really beneficial to me – I could network, share ideas, and we can collaborate beyond our schools.

“I could choose units that best met my needs and what I needed to grow as a teacher. I have been able to apply those learnings in my role at Harrison School.

“If you’re interested in doing further learning for your career, this is a valuable opportunity to connect and learn with other ACT teachers. It’s accessible and being supported to learn while also working in an ACT public school is great.”

“As we continue to address the impact of the teacher shortage in our schools, upskilling our existing teachers and providing further incentives to recruit new teachers is an important step we can take in making our public schools an employer of choice.

“We want our teachers to be the best they can be, and that is why we are proud to fund these scholarship to support our educators in their careers.”
