Vaulting ambition: 149 candidates contest ACT election

Let the games begin!

One hundred and forty-nine candidates – 12 more than in the 2020 election – will compete to become the next 25 Members of the Legislative Assembly, five in each electorate.

Thirty-four candidates will vie for Kurrajong, including Chief Minister Andrew Barr, opposition leader Elizabeth Lee, ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury, ministers Rachel Stephen-Smith and Rebecca Vassarotti, Independents for Canberra leader Thomas Emerson, and Peter Strong and Ann Bray from the Strong Independents. God help ’em all.

The candidates include 142 nominated by registered political parties and seven non-party candidates.

The ACT Electoral Commissioner, Damian Cantwell AM CSC, confirmed the list of candidates and the ballot paper order yesterday.

According to Elections ACT, the Robson Rotation method will be used, meaning candidates’ names within each column will be appear in a different order on each consecutive ballot paper, For each of the five-member electorates, 60 different ballot paper configurations will be printed.

Postal voting will begin on Monday, while all Canberrans will be able to vote at 11 early voting centres (list online) from Tuesday 8 October.
