- Reduce water use
As the room with the highest water consumption in the house, there have been many design improvements in recent years to move towards more environmentally sustainable bathroom fixtures.
Tapware, showers and toilets now use a lot less water, especially with dual-flush toilets increasing in efficiency; the newer models can save on water consumption by up to 50%. Higher WELS rated showerheads also offer huge savings in water usage without losing on luxury.
- Switch accessories
Consider purchasing bathroom accessories, including bathmats, towels and washcloths, made from organic, sustainable materials such as bamboo, hemp and cotton. Minimise your waste by purchasing package-free soaps and shampoos and re-using empties, such as glass jars, to hold your items.
- Light up your space
Natural lighting is always best when it comes to illuminating any space, especially the bathroom. If you’re in the process of renovating, consider installing a sun tunnel, skylight or large window. Not only will this allow the sun to stream in, but you’ll be cutting your utility bills and the need for artificial lighting. Otherwise, swap any old halogen or incandescent bulbs for LED lights, which use 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than regular bulbs.
- Add greenery
Not only do plants add a pop of colour, they also elevate your overall mood and improve the oxygen and air quality in the bathroom. You don’t need to be an expert in horticulture; choose plants that thrive in humid spaces such as a peace lily, which is low maintenance and will absorb excess moisture to help reduce any lingering bacteria.
- Sustainable statements
Beyond saving water and energy-efficient lighting, ensure that you opt for natural or sustainable materials for bigger fixtures such as vanities and cabinets. Look out for unique pieces that are made from repurposed and recycled timber – they make a great feature and they’re eco-friendly too!
