REVIEW: An escape to Neverland

This hilarious show will take you back to your childhood.

Peter and the Starcatcher recently held its Australian premiere at the Canberra Theatre Centre.

This show was perfect for a family night out but also for those adults without children to feel young at heart.

I feel like no matter how old you are, this show will take you back, as Peter Pan is a character many of us grew up with.

The costumes were colourful, and the comedic timing was perfect, with comedians Peter Helliar and Colin Lane (of Lano and Woodley fame) in the mix – the comedy duo I never knew I needed.

I also never thought I’d see Hellier in a mermaid costume.

The star-studded ensemble cast also included Otis Dhanji from the blockbuster film Aquaman, Olivia Deeble (Home and Away), Alison Whyte (Death of a Salesman and Groundhog Day The Musical), Paul Capsis (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and more!

The 12 actors played more than 100 characters collectively – which would not have been an easy feat to learn, rehearse and remember – alongside 90 puppets and 60 different hand-crafted costumes, all while accompanied by live musicians on the stage.

Another impressive part of the show was the puppets – I’ll leave it up to your imagination to think what they looked like, or, you’ll just have to go and see the show for yourself!

I can see why this New York City Broadway smash has been so popular – so much so that it has won five Tony Awards!

Originally a Disney Theatrical Group play, the show has been reimagined for Australian audiences.

The show opened in Canberra ahead of a national tour with show runs in Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane for the next five months.

The cast hung out in the foyer following the show where the public sipped on champagne – which was also offered as theatregoers entered after walking the red carpet – and munched on canapes.
