20yo man facing 32 charges after evading ACT police multiple times

A 20-year-old man is set to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today, facing 32 driving-related charges after allegedly evading police multiple times within a 24-hour period.

The incidents began around 4:55pm on Wednesday, 22 January, when the man was spotted riding a motorbike with a passenger and running a red light at Soward Way and Anketell Street, Greenway.

Later that evening, police observed a motorbike matching the description near a playground in Greenway. When directed to stop, the rider fled, weaving through grasslands and near members of the public.

Police attempted to stop the motorbike again at Drakeford Drive and Mortimer Lewis Drive, but the man reportedly evaded officers by riding onto a greenbelt, underpasses, and footpaths. Due to safety concerns, police halted their pursuit.

The following afternoon, on Thursday, 23 January, the rider was spotted again in Greenway without registration plates. Police allege he continued to evade capture, driving recklessly across dividing strips, double lines, and footpaths. Eventually, at about 5:30pm, the man was found outside a residence in Wanniassa.

A roadside alcohol screening returned a positive result, and subsequent testing at Tuggeranong Police Station revealed a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.098. As a suspended driver, the man was subject to a zero alcohol limit.

The man faces charges including reckless driving, drink driving, driving while suspended, failing to stop for police, driving on a path, using an unregistered vehicle, and using an uninsured vehicle.

Inspector Rod Anderson said running red lights and driving on footpaths posed serious risks, not only to drivers and their passengers, but to other road users and members of the community.

โ€œThis month, police are proactively targeting dangerous driving and members of the public can help us keep our roads safer by reporting incidents via ACT Policingโ€™sย Dangerous Driving online portal,โ€ Inspector Anderson said.
