GIVIT donation of the week: Safety equipment
A local foundation which supports vulnerable Indigenous Australians living in remote communities is in need of items for a new training program. The foundation focuses on educating community members to start their own independent, small businesses to facilitate local sustainability. Several young men and women have shown an interest in starting a landscaping business to maintain and upgrade local homes, community gardens and shared spaces. The foundation has been the recipient of a generous donation of landscaping equipment such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers and several other items. This equipment will allow the youth to undergo training to start their dream of building their own company. Unfortunately, the foundation does not have access to PPE equipment needed to begin the apprentice training. Items which are required are protective helmets, hearing and hand protection, visual protection (goggles or glasses), coveralls and safety boots. Any items which can be donated to this group will be greatly appreciated and will help them bring beautiful enhancements to their community. Donations can be delivered to the organisation. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. Another Chance op shop
With social distancing practices in place, Another Chance op shop has returned to full-time operations. Open weekdays 10am-4.30pm and Saturday morning 10am-1pm at Scullin shops, Ross Smith Crescent. Like their Facebook page for regular updates and sale notifications. Another Chance is a project of Mosaic Baptist Church – in the community, for the community.
Taste of Languages competition
Organised by the ACT Bilingual Education Alliance with support from the ACT government, Taste of Languages is a free competition open to kids from preschool to year 12. Prizes up to $100. SPARK construction program
SPARK, in partnership with Quality Training in Construction, Skills Canberra and the ACT Training Fund Authority, will deliver another Certificate II Construction Program for the Ginninderry development in 2020. The 2020 Ginninderry Construction Program will be delivered at a larger venue in Fyshwick to be able to implement COVID-19 social distancing requirements and follow the ACT Government COVID-19 Canberra Recovery Plan. The program will again focus on skills development, work experience and employment pathways within the construction sector and provide participants with a Certificate II in Construction (CPC20112) upon completion. This program will commence Tuesday 8 September 2020 and run four days a week (Tues-Fri, 28 hours per week) for 12 weeks. The program will be a combination of theory, practical hands-on learning and industry work placement. Eligibility criteria apply. An information session will be held on Wednesday 19 August 1pm; it is mandatory that anyone seeking to be on the program attend this session. Girl Guides launch new biscuits
For over 60 years, Girl Guide Biscuits have been sold to raise funds for new equipment, camps, outings, adventures and learning programs. Today, the iconic tradition is relaunching with a new modernised range which has been designed to represent the values of the organisation. The new range of biscuits officially launched late last month, with new flavours, a new look and new sizing, but the same ultimate mission – empowering girls and young women through fun, friendship and adventure. The range consists of locally made, individually wrapped 50g biscuits which include: Anzac, Triple Choc, and Gluten-Free Lemon, Lime and Coconut (endorsed by Coeliac Australia). The impact of COVID-19 means typical face-to-face selling will be restricted so the biscuits are predominantly being sold online and can even be sent as a gift to loved ones via the Girl Guide Biscuits website.
