Amaroo School promised $12 million expansion

Amaroo School’s senior campus will receive a more-than $12 million expansion that will permanently create a further 200 places, as part of the ACT Government’s $400 million announcement for schools over the next four years.

Expected to be ready for the beginning of the 2022 school year, the expansion will see new general and specialist learning areas for students in years seven to 10, refurbished science and technology buildings, and a covered walkway to the library.

Executive Principal of Amaroo School, Gai Beecher said the funding will see the current science and technology facilities doubled.

“This building will be for science and technology and particularly STEM … We’re looking at a robotics lab, we’re looking at specialist areas for our students to use,” she said.

“STEM is a very popular subject here at Amaroo, in every year level from year seven to year 10, and I know that students will be really excited with these new facilities.”

Ms Beecher said Amaroo is the ACT’s largest school, and it is only continuing to grow.

“It’s terrific that we’re getting the facilties to go with the growth.”

The expansion will increase the Amaroo School’s P-10 capacity to 2,319 students.

ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry said demand is increasing for public school enrolments in the ACT.

“We used to build one public school every four years, now we’re building four,” she said.

“So we can see significant growth, not just in our population but people choosing to attend public schools, with 3% increase in enrolments to public schools every year now.”

Ms Berry said the ACT Government would spend $17 million on transportable classrooms to meet this increased demand.

She said the Government would make further announcements with regards to funding for upgrades and maintenance for schools across the ACT. The Canberra Liberals have promised $15 million for school maintenance projects over the next four years, if elected in October.
