A 52-year-old Monash man was more than four times the legal limit when he crashed his ute into another vehicle at a Wanniassa carpark last night, Thursday 24 September.
Around 8.20pm, ACT Policing responded to reports of a collision between a ute and another parked vehicle at Wanniassa Oval.
The driver of the ute was attempting to reverse out of the carpark when he collided with another vehicle and was subsequently stopped by members of the public who contacted police.
The man was taken into custody and undertook a breath test at the Tuggeranong Police Station where he recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.224 – four and a half times the legal limit.
Detective Inspector Road Policing Marcus Boorman said drivers needed to plan ahead and organise a safe ride home if they were going to consume alcohol.
“You don’t even have to be on the road to see the immediate consequences of drink driving,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.
“Fortunately in this instance no one was injured but it is not hard to imagine the horrific consequences if this collision had happened on the road at full speed.
“Our message could not be clearer – if you are going to consume alcohol just don’t take the risk, don’t drive.”
The man’s licence was suspended and he appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court today.
