ACT Labor has pledged more than $2 million for upgrades to the National Arboretum as part its election commitments, with the funding to be used improve accessibility and roads.
The $2.2 million would be spent over the next six months and would include wheelchair accessible paths in Central Valley and the Himalayan Cedar Forest.
The funds would also allow for road upgrades throughout the National Arboretum, which would see 4.5 kilometres of dirt roads upgraded to tarmac to improve access in wet weather.
The upgrades would be form part of the fast-tracked infrastructure program, which ACT Labor leader Andrew Barr said has already provided “tens of millions of dollars” in support for local trades.
“The ACT Government will continue to focus our efforts on keeping Canberrans working over the next six to twelve months,” he said.
“Our city is facing a huge economic challenge and creating jobs is our number one priority.
“The pandemic isn’t over, and there is more work to do. But ACT Labor has the right plan to invest in Canberrans and lead our city through the pandemic.” Mr Barr said the arboretum recently received $390,000 for new café facilities, as part of COVID-19 “economic survival measures”.
