The University of Canberra (UC) will kick off its 30th anniversary celebrations as a university today, with the launch of its new UnCover Canberra podcast to be played on the Canberra Metro network.
UC was first established in 1967 as the Canberra College of Advanced Education and became a university in 1990.
UC will continue its celebrations for the rest of the week in true COVID-19 style, with a line-up of digital events.
Alongside today’s podcast launch, the wider public are invited to digitally attend this Friday’s Future Bright panel discussion and live music event hosted by comedian and UC alumnus, Wil Anderson.
UC Vice Chancellor and President of UC, Paddy Nixon, said he looked forward to celebrating the University, which had achieved so much in its 30 years.
“UC is ingrained in the very fabric of what makes Canberra great,” he said.
“There’s not a Canberran who has not either studied at UC, had a family member do their masters or PhD at UC, been taught by a primary or high school teacher who did their practical training through UC, been treated by a nurse or physio who graduated UC, been touched by research from UC, or watched the nightly news presented by a UC alumni.”
The UnCover Canberra podcast will cover a range of interesting local subjects and be played through the Canberra Metro network.
Episodes include getting to know a light rail driver, a one-on-one with UC Capitals star Marianna Tolo, and discussions with UC experts on how COVID-19 has impacted various sectors.
The University will also boast extra content on its UnCover online platform, reflecting on the past, present and future.
Professor Nixon said he was happy to see celebrations still go ahead, despite the pandemic putting some grand celebration plans on hold.
“I am proud to see Canberra’s University has delivered on its promise to our unique city for the past 30 years. This celebration is really about thanking our people who make it all possible,” he said.
“Now we look to the future of this incredible city and region and how we can continue to be intertwined in the fabric of Canberra to provide an incubation for innovation, question the status quo and provide progressive solutions for the future – I can’t wait to see what our future holds.”
