Drink driver five times over limit steals alcohol, crashes car

A 41-year-old man, who returned a blood alcohol level over five times the legal limit, was arrested in Lyneham on Saturday after allegedly drink-driving, crashing the car he had been driving and stealing alcohol.

About 4.10pm Saturday 7 November, a man who had been refused service due to suspected intoxication stole five cans of pre-mixed alcohol drinks from a North Lyneham shop, leaving behind a credit card, and driving away in a red Subaru Liberty.

About 5.36pm, police responded to reports of a collision at an address in Fred Williams Crescent, Lyneham, where a red Subaru Liberty had collided with a stationary vehicle and appeared to have knocked over a tree and a letterbox, before the driver fled on foot. Five cans of pre-mixed alcohol drinks were discovered in the car.

ACT Policing conducted mobile patrols of the area and a short time later located a 41-year-old in McClintock Street, Lyneham. Police will allege the man was both the driver of the Subaru at the time of the collision, and the person who committed the theft at North Lyneham.

The man was taken into custody, and after undergoing breath analysis which returned a result of 0.290, the man confirmed he had driven from Moncrieff to Lyneham while drinking alcohol.

Police then arrested and charged the man with drink-driving, driving while suspended, not leaving particulars after a crash, and minor theft. The man is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today, Monday 9 November.
