A Canberra couple are considering moving their retirement plans forward, after picking up a division one winning lottery ticket whilst travelling in Far North Queensland.
The pair purchased the winning ticket at Mt Sheridan Newspower for Saturday 21 November’s draw, taking home a prize of $549,405.38.
“We’re thrilled! We checked the ticket yesterday. My husband was making a cup of tea and I thought I’d better check it,” the winning woman said.
“I was sitting on the bed; thank goodness because it popped up on my screen that we’d won division one! I was yelling expletive after expletive after expletive.
“We thought there was no way it was right! My husband double-checked it on his phone as well. We still can’t believe it. What a holiday!”
The couple were one of 11 division one winners in Gold Lotto draw 4105, three each from Queensland and Victoria, two each from New South Wales and Western Australia, and one from South Australia.
The pair said they would use their winnings to pay off their debts, and even pass some on to their children.
“It’s going to make our lives so much easier. We will pay off the mortgage and give some to our children to help them get ahead. We both still work a little bit, but maybe we can retire now,” they said.
Mt Sheridan Newspower co-owner Tash Grace said she was pleased to hear the news of the win, especially at this time of year.
“What a great win just before Christmas and it is so exciting for us as new owners,” she said.
“We’ve been telling everyone that we’ve sold a division one winning entry and our customers are so happy for us.”
