New ‘urban distillery’ experience for tourists and locals

Canberra distillery Underground Spirits has launched its latest offering for the Canberra community, announcing a summer gin tasting experience to be held lakeside.

The Urban Distillery Experience celebrates place and the unique Canberran touch in all of Underground’s spirits, with tastings and masterclasses at the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre at Regatta Point, overlooking Lake Burley Griffin.

“After the year we’ve all had, who can think of anything better than learning to make cocktails, sipping on G&Ts, hearing the history of local Canberra gin making, all while overlooking Canberra’s iconic Lake Burley Griffin in the summer sunshine,” Underground Spirits CEO Claudia Roughley said.

The Urban Distillery Experience has two masterclass options. For those looking to learn how to master the art of a G&T, the 45-minute ‘Spirit of Canberra’ is just the thing – with four sample tastings, a gin and tonic (of course!) and a history of Underground and the gin scene here in Canberra.

Two masterclasses are available, taking people through the art of a G&T or the theatre of making cocktails.

The second, one-hour option is a cocktail masterclass with a mixologist and includes two cocktails and four sample tastings. The ‘Mixed Up!’ masterclass promises to showcase the theatre of cocktail making and show you how to really ‘shake’ that cocktail in style, all while you learn about the best festive cocktails through a demonstration.

“Our masterclasses take place in a beautiful setting adorned with Australian florals and botanicals, our special instagrammable spot, a beautifully illustrated mural explaining our gin making process, with a seated area to enjoy your tasting experience,” Ms Roughley said.

“You will be guided by Underground’s experienced staff and mixologists.”

The Urban Distillery Experience will run Thursday to Sunday throughout summer with a number of sessions per day, prices start from $35 per person.
