Your donation will help make a meaningful difference to people in need, knowing they will now have food on their tables at Christmas and gifts to give to their families. Donations are displayed in a ‘Christmas Cave’ for people in need to access and collect presents for their families. You can drop off your donation at several locations across Canberra including: Gungahlin Village, Cooleman Court, South.Point Tuggeranong, Luton Properties Tuggeranong, Canberra Toyota and the Gungahlin and Tuggeranong Community Centres. The Smith Family Christmas Appeal

With an immensely challenging year almost behind us, children’s education charity The Smith Family is calling on Australians to band together to ensure that thousands of students living in disadvantage can return to their learning in 2021, with the vital support they need to successfully continue their education journey. With generous support from the public, The Smith Family aims to raise $4.3 million nationally through its annual Christmas Appeal. This will provide 9,086 children with essential learning and mentoring programs to help them stay engaged at school. In the ACT region, the Appeal aims to raise more than $170,000, which will provide learning and mentoring support for 360 young ACT students in 2021. And the Toy and Book Appeal is hoping to bring smiles to the faces of more than 790 children in the ACT, ensuring that each of them wakes up to a special gift on Christmas Day. You can help by: making a donation to help more Australian students access the learning and mentoring programs they need to catch up and keep up at school; bringing a smile to the face of a child in need by purchasing a toy or book through The Smith Family’s online charity gift shop and/or donating a new toy or book; purchasing a Primary School Pack, High School Pack and/or a Closing the Gap pack to ensure children are equipped to excel in 2021; sponsoring a child through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which provides students with long-term, wrap-around support for their education; or giving back and volunteering your time, skills and energy to support The Smith Family’s life-changing work. GIVIT donation of the week: musical instruments

After losing their home in the Black Mountain bushfires, a couple relocated to the South Coast a few years ago hoping for a calmer lifestyle, where they could focus on their shared passion – playing music. Both being volunteer firefighters, they worked hard to protect their communities from the devastating fires of last summer. Unfortunately, while out protecting their neighbours’ homes, their own home and contents were completely destroyed. While optimistically focused on rebuilding their lives, for a second time, they deeply miss their passion for music. A local charitable organisation working to support this couple is looking for anyone able to donate musical instruments to these deserving heroes. An alto sax and a steel string acoustic guitar would be their dream instruments, however, they would be incredibly grateful for others such as a clarinet, tenor sax, trumpet, bugle, and other guitars. Donations can be delivered to or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit: givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Music and Entertainment” in the area of Bega, NSW to view these requests. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

Red Hill Primary’s 60th anniversary book

The memories of former Red Hill Primary School students and staff have been captured in a special publication to celebrate the Inner South school’s 60th anniversary. Open Hearts, Inquiring Minds records the history of RHPS since it opened in 1960, alongside the memories of pupils, teachers and the parent community of the past six decades. With the school’s plan to celebrate its anniversary with numerous events cancelled due to Covid-19, the Red HIll Primary School P&C decided a special commemorative magazine would be the best way to acknowledge the occasion and preserve the experiences of current and former students and staff. Opening Hearts, Inquiring Minds – Celebrating 60 years of Red Hill Primary School is available at the RedHill SupaExpress or by contacting the Red Hill P&C at [email protected]; cost is $19, with all proceeds going toward fundraising for the school.
