Celebrate the end of 2020 over three nights in Canberra

The usual New Year fireworks and concert in the city have been cancelled – but the ACT will still do its best to end the year with a bang, rather than the whimper that 2020 has been for many.

Three nights of music, lights and food across Canberra from Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December will bid farewell to a difficult year.

“This is the perfect year to make plans at your favourite local restaurant, support local business, catch some great live performances, and say ‘see ya later’ to 2020 in style,” Tara Cheyne MLA, Minister for the Arts and for Business, said.

New Year’s Eve across the City will create a celebratory atmosphere at several popular locations, including:

  • Lathlain Street in Belconnen
  • Anketell Street in Tuggeranong
  • Bradley Street in Woden
  • Hibberson Street in Gungahlin
  • Lonsdale Street in Braddon
  • Northbourne Avenue in the City

Each night, local performers and musicians will provide busker-style street performances from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

Colourful lights will shine brightly on iconic Canberran attractions, including the Telstra Tower, Questacon, Royal Australian Mint, Belconnen Arts Centre, the Canberra Times Fountain, and the National Carillion from 9pm to midnight.

The clocktowers in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong town centres will show a daily countdown to 2021 to help keep track of the final days of 2020.

New Year’s Eve across the City will be focused on keeping our community safe, while we support our local hospitality, arts and entertainment sectors,” Ms Cheyne said.

“By supporting one local business, you are supporting many more, including local producers, their suppliers and regional growers.”

Ms Cheyne said to avoid disappointment, book your celebratory meal at your favourite restaurants in advance. And if you are heading out this holiday season, download and use the Check In CBR app to help keep our community COVID-safe, and stay home if you are unwell.
