Police have today seized two more vehicles in relation to the numerous instances of dangerous hoon driving and burnouts committed across Canberra last weekend.
Following the seizure of two Holden Commodore sedans in Fyshwick on the evening of 8 January, police today, Friday 15 January, seized a Ford Falcon sedan and a Holden Commodore utility.
Police have now seized four vehicles in relation to the weekend’s incidents.
Police have also identified the man they will allege smashed the back window of a marked police vehicle on the evening of Friday, 8 January in Fyshwick. A court summons will be issued in relation to this incident.
ACT Policing Detective Inspector Adrian Craft said the drivers of the seized vehicles could also face charges.
“The behaviour these drivers displayed showed a total disregard for law and put lives in danger,” Detective Inspector Craft said.
The investigation into the incidents last weekend remains ongoing and police may conduct further seizures and arrests.
Lonsdale Street in Braddon had to be closed off by ACT Policing on both Friday 8 January and Saturday 9 January following reports of a large group performing burnouts and dangerous driving during an unregulated car cruise.
On both nights following the closure of Lonsdale Street police received reports of the groups moving on to perform burnouts at the corner of Yallourn Street and Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick where on Saturday night at least 1,000 people were in attendance before police arrived.
Earlier this week Detective Inspector Craft said police were blindsided by Friday 8 January’s initial gathering but were then made aware they could expect similar behaviour on Saturday 9 January.
“It was surprising in a sense this year because there was no organised Summernats event. We didn’t expect this sort of thing.
“When Summernats is on, we roster and apply our resources accordingly … It was just what we would have considered a normal Friday night, but we then had to deploy further resources to deal with what we faced.”
He said the absence of Summernats or a regulated facility in Canberra doesn’t justify the hoon behaviour witnessed over the weekend.
“There’s a number of boxing rings in the ACT but people still fight outside of boxing rings, so to use the excuse of the fact there was no Summernats on to justify this sort of behaviour is childish.”
