United’s unbeaten run over
Canberra United’s unbeaten run to start the W-League season has ended at five matches after a 4-0 defeat to the ladder-leading Sydney FC in Kogarah on Monday 8 February.
It was a matchup between the top two sides in the competition, but Sydney proved why they are the clear title favourites with a dominant display.
United remain in second spot on the ladder with three wins, two draws and one loss from their six matches.
Their next match is scheduled against Adelaide United at the Marden Sports Complex in Adelaide on Sunday 14 February 6.05pm.
Giants endure tough start to season
The GWS Giants have endured a difficult start to the 2021 AFLW season with consecutive losses to two of the premiership fancies.
After falling to the Dockers in round one over in WA, the Giants were back at home but were no match for a strong Adelaide Crows side.
The Giants had their chances in the second quarter but couldn’t capitalise on their territory dominance and went into half-time trailing by 25 points.
They battled hard to keep the Crows goalless in the third quarter before the game opened up in the final quarter and the Crows ran out 9.8 (62) to 2.3 (15) winners.
Alyce Parker was the standout player for the Giants, racking up a game-high 27 disposals and booting a goal to continue her strong start to the season.
The Giants next match is scheduled against the Gold Coast Suns in Blacktown on Saturday 13 February 3.10pm.
Brumbies burning to go back-to-back in 2021
Entering the 2021 Super Rugby AU season as defending champions, the Brumbies are burning to go back-to-back and maintain their title as Australia’s best.
Brumbies head coach Dan McKellar and captain Allan Alaalatoa returned to their home ground, GIO Stadium, for the first time since taking out the title in September last year to launch the Brumbies’ 2021 campaign on 3 February.
With the rest of the competition sure to be aiming at them, McKellar made clear his side won’t be resting on their laurels this year.
“We know if we roll out what we did in 2020 we won’t get the result that we want,” he said.
“That’s the challenge for any team in any competition, to try repeat what you did the previous year and get better.
“I thought last year we started Super Rugby, played some really good footy and then in different conditions over the winter months with the COVID break there, it sort of brought us back to the field a bit more, so we’re looking to get better.”
