UPDATE: A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder in relation to the Page death.
A dedicated investigative team has been established by ACT Policing in response to the death of a 34-year-old man on Braine Street, Page on the morning of Saturday 20 February.
Comprising investigators specialising in homicide, ACT Policing Detective Superintendent, Criminal Investigations, Scott Moller said the team have to date taken 20 witness statements.
“If there is anybody in the community who saw anything or witnessed anything on Saturday morning, I’d appreciate them contacting us or contacting Crime Stoppers,” he said.
The name of the dead man has not yet been released.
The three surviving people – two men aged 28 and 36, and a 20-year-old woman – are in hospital, having all undergone surgery; they are now heavily sedated and are all expected to survive their injuries.
The 36-year-old is the man police arrested on Saturday; however, no charges have been laid at this stage.
“We have arrested the man we believe was responsible for this incident, but due to the nature of his injuries, and the injuries incurred by the two surviving victims, it will be some time before we are able to speak further to them,” Detective Superintendent Moller said.
Forensic investigations at the site remain underway, and are expected to continue into tomorrow.
Police believe the offender used at least two knives in the initial attack.
Detective Superintendent Moller described the Page death as a “tragic” incident for those involved and the community.
“It was a terrible scene, there was a lot of blood and for the responding police and paramedics that went there, it was terrible.
“Everybody in the community is traumatised by it, it’s a tragic situation. We’ve got a man that’s dead and we’ve got some people with really horrific injuries.
“It is unusual. It’s an unusual set of circumstances.”
Detective Superintendent Moller said police who responded to the call arrived to an “unpredictable and very dangerous” scene.
“They were confronted by an armed offender who they were able to disarm and arrest and transport to hospital,” he said.
“The community again in the ACT … were the ones who contacted police. This is the type of cooperation police need to be able to do their jobs properly.
“The community has helped us, and we were able to get to the incident.”
