Brumbies etched into GIO Stadium with new mural

The Brumbies’ presence at GIO Stadium Canberra will now have a more permanent feel after they unveiled a bold new mural at the ground today.

The club commissioned local artist and designer Geoff Filmer of Graffik Paint to create the high impact piece.

The mural is located on the south west corner of the stadium and will add to the game day experience with supporters and members able to take photos with the new artwork.

Brumbies fans’ first chance to see the design in person will be tomorrow night when the club hosts their first home game of 2021 against the NSW Waratahs.

The club has enjoyed a great history with Canberra and GIO Stadium.

The stadium has hosted all bar one Brumbies home game since the start of Super Rugby in 1996.

The ground holds many fond memories for the club and its supporters as it was the scene for several great triumphs.

The Brumbies won the 2001 and 2004 Super Rugby titles at home as well as last year’s Super Rugby AU championship.

Brumbies CEO Phil Thomson said the artwork will serve as a reminder of the many great accomplishments for the club.

“GIO Stadium has been the site of many great memories and occasions for the Brumbies over the past 25 years,” said Thomson.

“It’s great to have a permanent reminder of that in the form of Geoff’s artwork and I’m sure it will bring a smile to the faces of our supporters and members.”

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar is hoping the mural will add to the experience for fans.

“To have our own permanent visual representation of the Brumbies on the wall at GIO Stadium is really exciting,” said McKellar.

“The playing group love nothing more than playing at home in front of our loyal supporters and having this painting will add to the game day experience for our Brumbies family.”

Artist Geoff Filmer said he was proud to be involved with an iconic Canberra team.

“The Brumbies are an iconic team and Canberra Stadium is an iconic location and I’m proud to have been involved in the project,” said Filmer.
