Bulky waste collection now available in Belconnen

Belconnen residents can now access bulky waste collection, with bookings opening this morning for the free service.

Each household is entitled to one free collection per year of up to two cubic metres of bulky waste, which can include furniture, appliances, white goods and electricals.

One collection day will be available in each suburb per quarter.

Bookings for the collection service can be made online via the ACT Government website.

“The online booking form takes less than five minutes to complete and shows the collection days available,” said City Services Minister Chris Steel.

“Once booked, bulky waste items can be left in an accessible location inside your property boundary for collection, so you don’t even need to be home at the time.”

Mr Steel said the city-wide rollout of the service would be complete by the middle of this year, after the Government abandoned plans for a staggered four-year rollout. Residents from all regions across Canberra will be able to book a collection online from 1 July.

Tuggeranong and Gungahlin were given access to the service last year and Mr Steel said it has contributed to an almost 40% resource recovery rate, contributing to the diverting of waste from landfill.

Mr Steel said a number of the items make their way back into the community through partnerships with charities like as GIVIT, the Salvation Army and Vinnies.

“This is another way we can all contribute to creating a circular economy where things are recycled and re-used, not simply thrown into landfill.”
