Friends of Black Mountain

Friends of Black Mountain will host several walks in April. Plants and Fire on Black Mountain, Saturday 10 April 9.30am-12pm; join plant ecologist Michael Doherty for a walk and talk about fire patterns and fire history on Black Mountain. Reimagine the Woodland on Black Mountain, Friday 16 April, 9.30am-12pm; join local botanist Isobel Crawford on the Woodland Trail to learn about the niches preferred by various plants. Reimagine Ngunawal and National Capital Stories of Black Mountain, Saturday 24 April 9.30am-12pm and 1.30-4pm; join Wally Bell, Ngunawal elder, and Mark Butz, local historian, as they tell tales about the Aboriginal, historic and natural heritage of Black Mountain. For all walks: Suggested donation of $5. Wear sturdy walking gear, including hat and stout shoes. Canberra Jung Society

On Friday 9 April 7.30pm, Canberra Jung Society presents Shauna Winram, an ANU PhD student, speaking on ‘How is Consciousness Structured?’, offering some tools to think clearly about consciousness, and come to a closer understanding of this mysterious phenomenon.  Ms Winram is currently completing a PhD in philosophy at the Australian National University, with a focus on consciousness and psychosis. GIVIT donation of the week: Activity vouchers

With school holidays well underway, a local support service is looking for enjoyable ways to engage their young clients this month. The organisation seeking support is a residential facility, supporting young people who have a moderate to severe mental illness. It is a voluntary program providing support to for a three-month period, offering care 24/7. The young clients participate in a range of social and therapeutic activities through a combination of case management and clinical support. The program assists residents to develop skills and resources to manage mental health and emotional wellbeing in the future. The team at this residential facility would love the opportunity to take their young clients on local excursions to feel integrated in their community in a safe and encouraging way. The organisation is seeking donations of activity vouchers to local Canberra attractions such as the National Zoo, Powerkart Raceway, the Reptile Zoo, ten pin bowling or cinema tickets. Feeling a sense of belonging and inclusion plays an important role in the transition from live-in care to returning to the home environment. Coffee/Op Shop

You’re invited to the Christ Church Hawker Coffee/Op Shop on Saturday 10 April 9am-12pm (corner Beetaloo Street and Belconnen Way). Stalls include: trash & treasure, books, pre-loved clothes and cakes. Tea/coffee served. A Covid-safe event.

Weston Creek Op Shop

Open Tuesdays 10am-1pm, the Weston Creek Presbyterian Church op shop, Mahony Court, Weston, has a good range of winter clothes priced from $4 to $10. Craft, manchester and books from $1. Come and join us for morning tea and find a nice outfit that suits you.

Greenway Probus Club

The Greenway Probus Club is a mixed club which meets 10.30am-12.30pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Vikings Town Centre Club, Tuggeranong. Cost $6. A short formal meeting and morning tea is followed by a guest speaker or other social activities. Upcoming guest speakers include: 13 April, Daniel Iglesius, director ACT Parks and Conservation; 11 May, Mia Swainson sharing tips on cutting household waste. Following the meeting you have the option of joining other members for lunch in the Vikings Club. Country Women’s Association (CWA)

Belconnen: Mother’s Day stall at Kippax Centre, Saturday 17 April 9am-1pm selling homemade baked goodies, jams and quality crafts. Funds raised go to local charities and CWA Disaster Relief. More info: 0402 112 973.

Queanbeyan Evening Branch: Resuming after a Covid hiatus, the next meeting is on Tuesday 13 April 7pm at the Tourist Hotel, 31 Monaro Street, Queanbeyan. The CWA aims to improve conditions for country women and children through lobbying for change, helping the local community, creating a network of support and meeting together. Marymead’s autumn garage and plant sale

Come along to Marymead’s autumn garage and plant sale on Saturday 17 April 9am-1pm at 255 Goyder St, Narrabundah, where you’ll find plants, bric-a-brac, books, toys, clothes, homewares, handbags, jewellery and accessories. Friends of Ireland

ANU Professor Melanie Nolan will speak about Irish-born Australian women in the Australian Dictionary of Biography on Saturday 18 April 2pm at the Canberra Irish Club, 6 Parkinson St, Weston. Professor Nolan will discuss women such as Martha Simpson, kindergarten teacher and school inspector, education pioneer and poet; Mary Lee, women’s suffragist and activist, trade unionist, social reformer, welfare worker and Single Taxer. RSVP: email Jill via [email protected]

VIEW Club

VIEW Clubs support The Smith Family and its Learning for Life Program, which helps children in need with their education. Visitors and interested women are always welcome to attend VIEW club meetings.

Mother’s Day gift, craft and cake stall

Calvary Hospital Auxiliary will hold a Mother’s Day Gift, Craft and Craft stall on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 April, 8am-4pm both days. There will be a great variety of jams, relishes, cakes and slices, as well as Mother’s Day gifts and craft items.  The stall will be held in the main foyer area, Calvary Public Hospital, Bruce. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of equipment for the care and comfort of Calvary Public Hospital patients. More info: call Mary 6254 4084.
