A 1940s find

This 1940s cottage in Ainslie is a rare gem in the sought-after Inner North, having been in the same family for more than 60 years: the family of the late ANU academic and Alliance Française de Canberra president, Helmut Loofs-Wissowa.

Close to the city and at the foothills of Mount Ainslie, 62 Limestone Avenue was designed by renowned architect Kenneth Oliphant in 1940. The home has since been renovated and extended in keeping with its original character and charm to include solar panels, hydronic heating, water tanks and double glazing, as well as an updated kitchen and laundry.

“The house celebrates the rich history of early builds and honours all that is essential for creating a warm and welcoming family home,” says Ray White Canberra licensed agent, Nicky Symon.

“Each room is unique, the attention to detail with tiling, fixtures, stained glass windows, unusual room shapes, natural materials, blend of European and ‘cottage’ styles.”

Full of character, the formal lounge boasts ornate ceiling detail and a wood fireplace, while the main bathroom is home to a claw-foot bath and stained glass. There are sash windows throughout, and French doors connect the home’s spaces together.

Throughout the four-bedroom home there are pockets of sunshine, especially in the main bedroom, large study and kitchen, with the home’s extension designed to take full advantage of the northerly aspect. In the private gardens, you’ll find mature, established trees and garden beds, Canberra red brick pavers, three sheds and a protected sunroom.

Close to all the amenities of the City and the Inner North, such as the ANU, schools and the iconic Ainslie Shops, Symon says this unique home will appeal to a number of buyers.

“The ideal buyers are families looking to enjoy the Inner North lifestyle, or potential buyers looking to purchase a home in the prized heritage precinct,” says Symon.
