Bake for Babies
The Newborn Intensive Care Foundation (NICF) is urging people from the Canberra region to take the Bake for Babies challenge to raise $40,000 to buy a cooling blanket and a phototherapy blanket to treat sick newborn babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Canberra Hospital. To raise the funds, NICF will run Bake for Babies from 1 June to 31 August. More info: www.newborn.org.au
GIVIT donation of the week: Electronic devices
Digital devices that make our lives easier, allow us to stay connected to family, health services, education and support are often what those struggling with a wide range of challenges live without. GIVIT is working hard to lessen this gap by ensuring all pre-loved quality devices that still have a good life in them make their way to a new owner, rather than e-recycling. The requests for technologically devices range from a young man who has overcome substance abuse, looking to create new opportunities for himself through study, yet needs a laptop to undergo his training; former rough sleepers who are working as hard as they can to maintain a permanent home, yet cannot afford a mobile phone, often a requirement for employment; to students on humanitarian visas striving to achieve degrees in design and music, yet require specific desktops, laptops or tablets for their studies that their families do not have the means to provide. Any working electronic devices that can be generously donated will create a world of opportunity for the recipient. Is your dog a lucky star?
Canberra dog rescue charity ACT Rescue and Foster Inc. (ARF) are giving your dog a chance to shine. Enter their Shooting Star fundraising raffle before 29 May and help ARF to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs in need. The winner of the raffle will have their dog feature in ARF’s 2022 calendar and other prizes. Tickets are $50; only 100 tickets are available. Canberra Men’s Choir
On Sunday 30 May 2-3pm, the Canberra Men’s Choir will hold their first concert since pandemic restrictions began, at Harmonie German Club, Narrabundah. ‘Becoming well’conversations
Holy Covenant Anglican Church, Cook, is hosting a series of free community discussions with mental health practitioners on the first Thursday night of every month. These “becoming well”conversations address a range of matters affecting people in the wider community. All are welcome. Each conversation will feature some take away resources for the carers of those experiencing distress. On Thursday 3 June 7pm, Lifeline and Holy Covenant will facilitate a discussion about domestic and family violence. Vinnies Winter Appeal
Vinnies 2021 Winter Appeal is underway, calling for donations to support the rising numbers of Canberrans experiencing homelessness and financial hardship. Providing vital services for individuals and families, Vinnies is calling for contributions to help children experiencing homelessness sleep safe this winter. The money raised from the Winter Appeal will provide the emotional and financial assistance that struggling families need to hang on to their tenancies and maintain a secure environment for their children. Our Rainbow Country scholarship
JOY is Australia’s Rainbow independent community media organisation, covering LGBTIQASB+ experiences and giving a platform to people from the rainbow community. The Our Rainbow Country Scholarship, supported by BHP, is designed to provide training and give a voice in podcasting and radio to rainbow community members based in regional, rural and remote Australia. The scholarship will cover 97% of the program’s cost, valued at $1,475, and successful participants will be required to pay $45 towards the course. This course is designed so anyone can participate using equipment and internet access they have at home. There are 24 spots available and applications close 31 May 11.59pm. 2021 Canberra Dragon Boat Festival
The 2021 Dragon Boat Festival will be held at the Beijing Garden, Yarralumla on Sunday 13 June 10.30am-3.30pm with food stalls, selling traditional street, Asian and festival food, and cultural games stalls, such as Kungfu show, tea ceremony, calligraphy and origami. Presented by Dragon Boat ACT, Oriental City News and the Chinese Voice program of FM91.1 Canberra Multicultural Service (1CMS), the Dragon Boat Festival is an annual cultural event that brings families, friends and communities together to enjoy food and entertainment. There will be a dragon boat demonstration at 11am-12pm, plus traditional dancing, singing, poetry, a dragon and lion dance, and more.
