Raiders record home win over Broncos

The Canberra Raiders managed just their second home win with a comprehensive 38-16 victory over the Brisbane Broncos at GIO Stadium on Saturday night, 12 June.

It was the Raiders first win in Canberra since round one and has put them on equal points with the eighth-placed Dragons.

The Raiders made a fast start with Sebastian Kris scoring the opening try after just four minutes.

Jack Wighton shifted from the left side of the field to the right side in a nice move that opened up a gap for Corey Harawira-Naera to power through and extend the Raiders lead to 10-0.

The Broncos hit back through a fortunate try to Tyson Gamble. Matt Timoko responded for Canberra with a powerful run that set up Sam Williams near the posts.

Emre Guler added another for the Green Machine before the dangerous Tesi Nui got one back for Brisbane to make it 22-10 at the break

Given Canberra’s second half woes this season, first points after the break were always going to be crucial and it was Josh Papalii who delivered from close-range to help settle the Raiders’ nerves.

Winger Semi Valemei was the next to cross after some nice lead-up work from fullback Bailey Simonsson to extend the Raiders’ lead to 32-10.

Fresh off a huge State of Origin Game I victory for NSW, Wighton put the finishing touches on the win with a brilliant individual try to secure the Raiders’ fifth win of the season.

Simonsson was one of the standouts for the Green Machine, running for 243 metres and adding two try assists in his first game at fullback. Young centre Timoko showed plenty of promise in his first game of the season and Papalii was outstanding in his return from suspension.

The tenth placed Raiders will look to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to Wollongong to take on the Dragons on Saturday 19 June at 5.30pm.
