Sites released for Molonglo Valley’s ‘urban village’

The ACT government has announced it will transform three prominent commercial sites off John Gorton Drive in Coombs into the vibrant village centre Molonglo Valley residents want.

The sites are on a prominent intersection of John Gorton Drive and Fred Daly and Steve Irwin Avenue.

The Suburban Land Agency will release the last commercial and mixed-use sites in Coombs and Wright to market shortly through an Expression of Interest process.

The site release will be accompanied by the Coombs and Wright Village Design and Place Framework, which locks in the layout, design, and connectivity of each block, and mandates ground floor commercial floor space.

“The Village Framework will create a buzzing suburban core and will be accompanied by a significant investment in offsite works, delivered by the Suburban Land Agency,” said Yvette Berry, Minister for Housing and Suburban Development.

Steve Irwin and Fred Daly Avenue will be made into a village main street with shade trees and a new public square, which will become a community meeting and outdoor dining space.

The works include a small public pavilion, toilets, and a performance space in Coombs Park – welcome additions to an underutilised space, Ms Berry said.

“The ACT Government has listened to the Molonglo Valley community and their desire to see more retail, hospitality and community-focused facilities in the area,” Ms Berry said.

A Molonglo Valley community panel recently told the ACT Government that Coombs and Wright desperately need a well-designed, high quality central village district where residents can eat, shop, live, and play.

In addition, a multi-storey community centre is proposed for the corner of Fred Daly Avenue and Beecroft Street, managed by ACT Property Group.

An aged care facility will be built on a fourth site off Harriott Street and Alex Colley Crescent in Wright. The facility will include independent living units and aged care beds. The site will be released via Tender.
