Crafts for a cause: can you commit to sewing a set or two of scrubs?
Following the Federal Government’s plea for Australian businesses to help wherever they can during the COVID-19 crisis, Spotlight will be donating an initial 10,000 metres of fabric and over 300 scrubs patterns to groups and individuals seeking to be involved in the making of much-needed scrubs and getting these to frontline medical staff all over the country. Spotlight has created a dedicated Facebook group hub, ‘Spotlight Crafts for a Cause’ which invites keen sewers to register their interest and confirm how many sets of scrubs they can commit to making. It includes all information on how to access the approved pattern supplied by Spotlight, the specific fabrics required to make the scrubs and how the scrubs can be safely supplied to health care workers who need them most.
GIVIT donation of the week: Small freezer
A local charity supporting those in aged care is in need of a small freezer for one of their clients. The organisation offers a service for the elderly who can no longer prepare their own meals due to age, disability or a temporary condition. During the COVID-19 crisis the charity is supplying clients with frozen meals to ensure their daily needs are met. A client without a freezer is urgently seeking one so they can a participant in this program. As it’s only for one, a small, front door freezer will suit perfectly. You generous donation will bring ease and comfort to the recipient’s daily life.
Delivery options: Items can be dropped-off to the charity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘freezer’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. Relay Your Way
Canberra Relay For Life is continuing with a new format to raise funds for Cancer Council ACT’s vital research, prevention, advocacy, information and important support services for the ACT community. Ignite your imagination and Relay Your Way, in a safe environment, whether it’s parading around your Team Captain’s neighbourhood (1.5m apart), walking around the local deserted oval or setting a steps challenge for your team to achieve in their individual homes. Virtual scones on the menu
This time each year, CWA members from across NSW and the ACT are preparing to volunteer at the CWA Tea Room at the Royal Easter Show, but with no show this year, the four Canberra CWA Branches are urging the community to get behind an alternative fundraising opportunity by purchasing a plate of ‘virtual scones’ for $5 or other virtual goodies. Anyone who makes a donation will receive a PDF copy of the CWA of NSW’s famous scone recipe to try whipping up some of these much-loved treats at home. Red Shield Appeal
The Salvation Army has announced they are unable to proceed with their Red Shield Appeal launch events as planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Red Shield Appeal is the organisation’s key annual fundraising campaign which helps to fund hundreds of services and programs across Australia that support more than 300,000 people. Family history writing competition
The 2020 E.M. Fletcher Writing Competition, an initiative of the Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra (HAGSOC), is open for entries until 15 July. The competition selects the best short story on a family history/genealogy theme, the genre of writing is not limited, and the broad theme allows plenty of scope for creativity. Youth survey
Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2020 is now open, with the charity extending the opening period to encourage as many young people as possible aged 15-19 across the ACT to have their say. This year, the survey will continue to have a focus on mental health and wellbeing, with a further look into how young people seek help. The Youth Survey will also ask new questions around discrimination and transition to employment, along with financial concerns and exclusion. In light of the widespread dumping of donated items and waste at op shops and charity bins, GIVIT is calling for generous Australians to donate the safer and smarter way – online at givit.org.au. At this stage, the immediate needs for vulnerable Australians are toiletries, grocery vouchers and home-schooling items. Mates4Mates
Mates4Mates is still providing services for veterans with CEO Troy Watson encouraging veterans to reach out for support if required. All psychology and exercise psychology appointments are now available via Skype, Facetime or phone to ensure that people can access vital support, no matter where they live.
