COVID infrastructure construction projects complete

Community infrastructure projects fast-tracked last year to stimulate the economy and create jobs through the COVID-19 pandemic are now complete, announced Chris Steel, Minister for Transport and City Services.

The ACT Government has repaired paving and made other improvements at 13 local shopping centres in older suburbs to maintain them as vibrant hubs for community activity and support businesses based there.

The government has expanded its active travel and public transport networks. Two new park and ride locations are now available in Lyneham and Evatt; the next stage of the Heysen Street Link is complete; and a new bike and ride facility is ready for use on Barry Drive.

Work is almost finished on new public toilets at Lake Tuggeranong and John Knight Memorial Park. Both are expected to be open soon.

To complement the annual road resurfacing program, the government has increased asphalt patching in Banks, Gordon, Conder, Isabella Plains, Gilmore, Weston, Curtin, Symonston, Chapman, and Hughes to fix potholes and ensure Canberra has high quality roads.

The government has built new bus stops or relocated existing ones in growth suburbs such as Taylor, Coombs, Wright, and Denman Prospect.

“These community projects have been delivered alongside work on the ACT Government’s largest-ever pipeline of major projects to protect and create jobs while delivering the infrastructure our city needs – so that we can bounce back better,” Mr Steel said.
