The late Sue Salthouse has been honoured with the announcement of a leadership fund in her name to assist people with disability to pursue leadership roles.
“On what would be her 72nd birthday, the establishment of this fund will continue her legacy to create a more accessible and equitable Canberra,” said ACT Disability Minister, Emma Davidson.
“Two years ago, Sue announced the establishment of a community fund and I’m proud that this new named fund builds upon the work she generously started.”
Sue Salthouse passed away in July last year. She was a passionate advocate for people with disability and was the board chair of Women with Disabilities ACT. She was named the 2015 Canberra Citizen of the Year and the 2020 ACT Senior Australian of the Year.
Ms Davidson said the fund would empower people with disability to pursue leadership development opportunities including attending conferences, university mentoring and skill-building courses.
On behalf of the ACT Government, Hands Across Canberra will administer the $75,000 seeding fund which is expected to grow through philanthropic support.
The organisation will work with an advisory group made up of Sue Salthouse’s family and ACT Disabled People’s Organisations including Women with Disabilities ACT and Advocacy for Inclusion.
“There is no doubt that Sue touched so many people right across our community and creating a named fund will ensure Sue’s commitment to people with disability and her huge impact on us all is enduring,” said Hands Across Canberra CEO, Peter Gordon.
