GIVIT donation of the week: Internet dongles

Many charities across the ACT are urgently seeking internet dongles to help their clients – families and tertiary students affected by Covid-19 – stay connected. Many families and individuals who would typically rely on public and school facilities for internet access now find themselves without a way to stay connected or complete school work from home. The dongle will give families the means to maintain their children’s studies, help newly unemployed workers gain access to job search or online employment, as well as giving individuals who struggle with mental and physical health needs the ability to access care services from the safety of their home. Charities are looking for internet dongles with or without credit. Items can be dropped-off, posted to or pick-up by the charity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘dongle’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. GIVIT supports over 300 charities across the Capital Region by matching your quality, pre-loved items with people who need them most.

Donate smarter, safer

In light of the widespread dumping of donated items and waste at op shops and charity bins, GIVIT is calling for generous Australians to donate the safer and smarter way – online at givit.org.au. At this stage, the immediate needs for vulnerable Australians are toiletries, grocery vouchers and home-schooling items. Family history writing competition

The 2020 EM Fletcher Writing Competition, an initiative of the Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra, is open for entries until 15 July. The competition selects the best short story on a family history/genealogy theme, the genre of writing is not limited, and the broad theme allows plenty of scope for creativity. Youth survey

Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2020 is now open, with the charity extending the opening period to 14 August to encourage as many young people as possible aged 15-19 across the ACT to have their say. This year, the survey will continue to have a focus on mental health and wellbeing, with a further look into how young people seek help. The Youth Survey will also ask new questions around discrimination and transition to employment, along with financial concerns and exclusion. Mates4Mates

Mates4Mates is still providing services for veterans with CEO Troy Watson encouraging veterans to reach out for support if required. All psychology and exercise psychology appointments are now available via Skype, Facetime or phone to ensure that people can access vital support, no matter where they live. #FootballForFires

The Football For Fires bushfire relief match has been rescheduled from 23 May to Saturday 3 October at Bankwest Stadium with all ticketholders to be accommodated at the new venue. Most of the superstars of football who had committed to the #FootballForFires game in May had indicated they would travel to Australia for this important fundraising event later in the year, with additional players now to be added. The event will honour and recognise all fire-fighting agencies and State Emergency Services personnel who were involved in the recent bushfire crisis e. All proceeds from the match will go toward the restoration and improvement of local football clubs and facilities in fire-affected areas nationwide.

Walk Safely to School Day

The Pedestrian Council of Australia has advised that Walk Safely to School Day has been postponed. The annual event, now in its 21st year, was scheduled for 15 May. Chairman and CEO of the Pedestrian Council, Harold Scruby, said they are hoping to be able to reschedule the event later in the year.

Financial counselling

Is your small business suffering? Free financial counselling is available. Financial Counselling Australia has launched Australia’s first financial counselling service for small business. The Small Business Bushfire Financial Counselling Support Line (1800 413 828) and website (smallbusinessbushfire.org.au) fills a much-needed gap: financial counselling for small businesses affected by the bushfires and experiencing financial difficulties.
