Local scarecrow competition brings community together

Another community event has fallen victim to COVID-19 restrictions but the Weston Creek Community Council (WCCC) have refused to let lockdown dampen their spirits.

The council’s infamous yearly Father’s Day Scarecrow Competition has been moved online this year and the community is encouraged to create their quirky scarecrows in their front yards and post them on social media instead.

The idea to move the competition online is credited to the organiser of WCCC’s Chapman Floriade Community Patch, Simone Hunter, whose innovation has saved the popular Father’s Day activity.

Interim chair of the council, Bill Gemmell says it’s a great distraction for kids in lockdown and a good opportunity to connect with one another in these pretty average times.

Labor Member for Murrumbidgee Dr Marisa Paterson MLA has collaborated with the council on the community project and wants to remind people not to leave your local area to view scarecrows. She also wants participants to reuse, renew and upcycle materials instead of buying new things.

“Small and colourful acts like this are a proven way to keep up morale and build a sense of community cohesion and connectedness, especially during challenging times,” Dr Paterson said.

“I’ve never built a scarecrow before, but I’m looking forward to giving it a go in my own front yard with my kids next weekend.”

The three winners will be voted on by the community through the campaign webpage and via Dr Paterson’s Instagram and Facebook pages.

Here’s how to enter:

  • Email a photo to [email protected]
  • Post a photo on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #CBRScarecrow and tag @MarisaPatersonMLA on Facebook or @marisapaterson_mla on Instagram

Winners will be announced on Tuesday 14 September.
