Canberra Health Services (CHS) has confirmed the mandated training required for any student nurse responding to ACT Health’s callout to join the front lines of COVID response.
“We have been working closely with the ACT health care sector unions, professional peak bodies and universities to bring student health practitioners on board to assist in the ACT’s COVID-19 pandemic response,” ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said.
A spokesperson for CHS detailed that all suitable applicants would have already completed initial training and are ready to care for patients under limited supervision.
“Student nurses and midwives have also undertaken additional mandatory checks including immunisation, police checks, and have obtained working with vulnerable people cards, to undertake hospital placements as part of their study.
“Each applicant’s suitability for the program will be assessed based on their level of study and demonstrated competency. They will be inducted, trained, and supervised to ensure the ACT community is receiving safe and quality care,” the spokesperson said.
Students will undertake training required to administer vaccinations, including dedicated training modules for each of the COVID-19 vaccines.
They will also undertake CHS induction and training, standard for all new recruits. This will include components on hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and work health and safety. The students will also undergo “competency-based assessments” on administering a vaccine.
“The vaccinating team is a large team working incredibly hard to ensure large numbers of people get vaccinated every day in a seamless way. First and foremost, we want enthusiastic people to join our team and be part of this history-making program,” the CHS spokesperson said.
