Stephens, McLean among Swans re-signings

Former first-round draft pick Dylan Stephens and promising tall Hayden McLean have re-signed with Sydney for the next two AFL seasons.

South Australian midfielder Stephens, 20, has played 15 games over two seasons since being taken at pick No.5 in the 2019 draft and had been linked to a trade.

But he and 22-year-old McLean, who played 12 of his 22 career games this season and impressed as a marking key forward, have both committed to the Swans until the end of 2023.

Reliable backman Robbie Fox and yet-to-debut defender Will Gould have both signed one-year deals.

The four re-signings are a boost to Sydney, who copped a hefty blow last week when the classy Jordan Dawson requested a trade back to South Australia.

“We are excited to have these players commit to our program,” Swans general manager of football Charlie Gardiner said.

“We are confident in the direction our young group is heading and believe that all four players can play important roles for the club going forward.”

Gardiner expected both Stephens and Gould to push for more consistent senior selection next season.

Reliable midfielder George Hewett, who has been linked to Carlton, and veteran tall Sam Reid are among the Swans still uncontracted for next season.

Meanwhile Sydney confirmed injury-prone former first-round pick Matthew Ling had not been offered a new contract, along with former Port Adelaide small forward Sam Gray, ex-Hawk Kaiden Brand and untested rookie Malachy Carruthers.
