How we’re spending Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day will be just a little bit sweeter this year, with the ACT easing COVID-19 restrictions just in time to allow more people to gather together as a family.

The Government announced today gatherings could take place with no more than 10 people, provided all physical distancing measures were observed, which will come as welcome relief for those who were prepared to celebrate a ‘virtual’ Mother’s Day. We can now visit our mums in person, yay!

It’s also good news for family groups larger than 10 people; exceptions are in place for families to meet where the number of people will exceed 10.

With that in mind, we asked around the Canberra Daily office to see how everyone was planning to spend their Mother’s Day in this strange, new normal.

Who’s doing what

I see her every day at work so the weekend is my time off. Mother’s Day is no exception. (We’re pretty sure he’s joking).

  • Vincent Samaras

I haven’t been able to spend as much time with my family due to social distancing, so I’m looking forward to enjoying lunch together and having a glass of champagne with Mum!

  • Libby Kimber

My plan for Mother’s Day is to be spoilt by my girls with breakfast in bed cooked by them, snuggling up in front of the fire watching a movie and then dinner with my mum and sister cooked by my husband!

  • Sam Watson

My sister and I are doing an at home high tea for our mum… It’s gonna be pretty fancy!

  • Eboni Abedin

Usually on Mother’s Day, around 12 of us from a few households gather at a relative’s home to celebrate the three mums (including one grandma) in our group. We share a feast – starring freshly roasted chestnuts – and play party games, such as pin the tail on the donkey. With the easing of restrictions today, most of us will be able to get together on Sunday. I’ll be spending Mother’s Day in the presence of my two adult sons who I see at work most days. My 83-year-old mum (who has four kids, 10 grandkids and four great-grandkids) lives in Cairns. I’ll be calling Mum and thanking her for a lifetime of love and guidance. I look forward to hugging both of my parents in Cairns once restrictions ease and (affordable) domestic flights resume.
