Melbourne transport staff have rescued six ducklings from train tracks at Flinders St station.

When the ducklings were spotted on the tracks at platform 10 earlier on Friday, workers quickly stopped a train from departing.

When Metro Trains worker examined the pit under the train, they discovered the ducklings and rounded them up, despite one trying to escape.

Rescuers from Wildlife Victoria then collected the ducklings and took them to a wildlife shelter.

Wildlife Victoria CEO Lisa Palma said the Metro Trains workers were quick-thinking and heroic. 

“We very much appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in the rescue of these ducklings,” she said.

The baby ducks are being cared for in captivity and will be released when they can fend for themselves.

Wildlife Victoria says if people spot ducklings, they should not get too close, especially if their parents are nearby.

People should try to alert oncoming traffic if ducklings are spotted on the road.
