Quarantine measures for close contacts linked to the Omicron variant will be relaxed in the ACT, despite a small rise in cases linked to the new strain.

Fully vaccinated close contacts of Omicron cases will now only need to quarantine for seven days as opposed to 14.

The changes will come into effect from 11.59pm on Wednesday.

However, ACT health authorities have urged close contacts of Omicron cases to limit their movement in the community during days eight to 14 since their exposure.

Household contacts of Omicron close contacts will no longer be required to quarantine as a secondary contact.

However, unvaccinated close contacts will still need to undergo 14 days of quarantine.

ACT deputy chief health office Vanessa Johnston said those coming out of quarantine after seven days should limit their gatherings in the community and avoid venues with large numbers of people.

Dr Johnston cited concern given the exploding number of Omicron cases in other jurisdictions.

She said a mask mandate will not be reintroduced.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith revealed there had been 14 cases of the Omicron variant in the ACT, with one of those having recovered.

More than 20 per cent of the 61 active COVID-19 cases in the ACT are linked to the Omicron variant.

It comes after Canberra recorded seven new cases of COVID-19 in the past reporting period.

Three people are in hospital with one in intensive care and not requiring ventilation.

The ACT’s nation-leading vaccination rate has increased further to 98.3 per cent of those 12 and over.

Ms Stephen-Smith said travel restrictions for interstate and overseas arrivals into the ACT would be eased further.

From midnight on Thursday, there will be no restrictions on interstate travel to the ACT, except for close contacts of COVID-19 cases interstate.

People will no longer have to fill out declaration or exemption forms to enter the capital, and all high-risk geographic areas have been removed.

For international arrivals, a three-day quarantine period will still be required for overseas travellers.

However, additional restrictions mandating two weeks of quarantine for arrivals from eight southern African nations will be removed,

Unvaccinated arrivals from overseas will still need to do 14 days of quarantine at their entry point to Australia.
