Parts of Canberra smashed by large hailstones

Northern parts of Canberra have been hit hard by large hailstones during thunderstorms on Monday afternoon 3 January.

There were reports of trees falling on homes and roads, fallen powerlines, localised flooding, and water damage across Canberra.

ACT State Emergency Service have received 436 requests for assistance as of 6.30am Tuesday 4 January.

Crews worked through the night to attend to priority incidents, and have completed 211 jobs, with 225 requests still outstanding.

Belconnen and Gungahlin were the hardest hit regions, with the majority of the requests coming from these areas.

“The clean up is expected to extend across the next couple of days, with the highest priority incidents being attended first,” the SES said in a statement, adding that more staff and volunteers would join the effort on Tuesday morning.

EvoEnergy said power had been restored to 10,000 homes but more than 7500 customers in Belconnen remained without electricity overnight.

“Due to extensive damage, repairs will take time and we ask for your patience,” the electricity supplier said in a tweet.

Several posts on social media showed the carnage during the storm with the scenes reminiscent of the destructive hailstorm that ravaged Canberra in early 2020.

More posts showed the aftermath of the storm with several fallen trees.
