Monaro Highway roadworks begin

Early works for significant upgrades to the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive next year have begun.

A new southbound flyover will be built on the Monaro Highway over Lanyon Drive (including three-metre-wide sealed shoulders).

Traffic lights at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (intersection of the Monaro Highway and David Warren Road) will be removed.

A new roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of the new Monaro Highway southbound off-ramp and David Warren Road extension.

The signalised intersection at Lanyon Drive and Sheppard Street will be upgraded to four ways to include a direct connection to David Warren Road and the Monaro Highway southbound off-ramp.

The $230.5 million roadworks are jointly funded by the Australian and ACT governments.

“Once completed, this upgrade will make the Monaro safer and improve travel times and capacity, ensuring Canberrans can get home sooner and safer,” said Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja.

“These upgrades will support the safe and efficient movement of people and freight around a growing part of our region in Southern ACT and NSW,” said Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Transport and City Services.

Early works will relocate utilities.

In the coming weeks, an expression of interest for the tender to design and construct the Lanyon Drive Interchange upgrades will be released.

A contract will be awarded late this year, and construction will begin in 2023.

In the second stage of the Monaro Highway project, a new bridge will replace intersections at Sheppard Street, Tralee Street and Mugga Lane.

In stage three, a new interchange at Isabella Drive will connect Tuggeranong, Hume, and Googong.
