Hoons damage police vehicle in Fyshwick

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an incident in Fyshwick on Friday night where a police vehicle was deliberately damaged.

About 11pm on Friday 4 March, police attended Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick after a large group of people and vehicles congregated there. The group had earlier been moved on from Hume after hoon driving and burnouts were reported to police.

A white Holden Commodore was observed doing burnouts on Canberra Avenue and as police vehicles moved to engage the Commodore, a large group deliberately blocked the road.

People then damaged the police vehicle including throwing a star-picket, which lodged in the roof-racks of the vehicle.

The Commodore that conducted the burnouts was located soon after and seized.

Officer in Charge of Road Policing, acting Inspector Ken Williams said this type of behaviour must stop.

“This group had already been moved on from Hume and they chose to go and encourage illegal activity in Fyshwick. To then willfully hinder police and damage a vehicle is the simplest form of mob behaviour,” said acting Inspector Williams.

“We will not tolerate this type of activity and will be actively engaging these groups whenever and wherever they congregate. We will also be combing through multiple pieces of social media to identify those responsible for Friday night’s damage.”

Anyone who can assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.  Please quote 7049860.
