The University of Canberra Capitals (UC Caps) have ended their regular WNBL season in the most uncharacteristic way, losing to the Melbourne Boomers 52 – 107 on Saturday 19 March in Melbourne.

The loss comes just two days after their lowest scoring game of the season against the Adelaide Lightning, a score only surpassed by two points tonight in Melbourne.

The UC Caps started Round 15 on top of the table, coming off a thrilling win against the Perth Lynx who held the top spot for most of the season.

The team seemed to have hit their stride as the season was coming to a close, but this week’s gruelling three road trips may have tested the team’s stamina.

Britt Sykes put up 14 points and Kelsey Griffin and Jade Melbourne added 9 points each.

Overall, the UC Caps shot at 33 per cent from the field and 20 per cent from the arc compared to Melbourne at 62 per cent and 57 per cent.

The Boomers’ starting five scored in double digits, including Cayla George who led her team with 23 points and 8 rebounds.

The UC Caps will nonetheless play in semi-finals next week, with the final ladder positions to play out in the next 24 hours.

The UC Caps have dropped to third place after Saturday night’s forgettable performance and if Adelaide win on Sunday against the Southside Flyers, they’ll drop to fourth.
