Canberrans can have their say on the ACT Government’s upgrades to Tuggeranong foreshore and a new recreation park in Casey.
The government committed $4.5 million in the 2021–22 ACT Budget to revitalise the Lake foreshore.
Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, wants feedback from Southsiders on making Lake Tuggeranong a better place to visit for recreation.
Upgrades could include more trees, bins and seating, or upgrades to landscaping, paths, playgrounds and skate park, parking, shelter, toilets and outdoor dining amenities and other community priorities.
“Lake Tuggeranong users are invited to drop a pin on a map of the Lake, and tell us where they would like to see specific improvements to facilities and other infrastructure,” Mr Steel said.
Greens backbencher MLA Johnathan Davis conducted a survey of Tuggeranong residents; his report was published last week.
“I encourage all of my constituents to take advantage of every single opportunity to tell the government what they think and ensure that the $4.5 million allocated is spent efficiently, effectively, and with the view of getting the best outcome for Tuggeranong,” Mr Davis said.
The Tuggeranong Foreshore project builds on the government upgrades in Anketell Street, Tuggeranong Town Square, and the Laneways to the Lake, Mr Steel said.
New Casey recreational park
The government has also released a draft concept plan for a new community recreation park in Casey, following an initial consultation.
Proposed improvements to the park include a basketball court, a bike track, a grassed amphitheatre, toilets, barbecues, an irrigated green space, a community garden space, and a pedestrian crossing linking to the existing playground and car parking.
Mr Steel encouraged Gungahlin residents to have a say on their priorities for these works and other improvements to this new community space.
“This will be an important high-quality addition to the recreation facilities currently available in Casey and the Gungahlin region,” he said.
The Lake Tuggeranong upgrades and Casey park are part of Canberra’s biggest suburban infrastructure program.
“We promised new and upgraded local infrastructure to support jobs, local businesses, and communities,” Mr Steel said. “Now it’s time for Canberrans to tell us what their priorities are for investment in two recreational parks to inform the designs.
“We’ve already kicked off consultation on better local shopping centres and the design and location of four upgraded playgrounds. Together with these projects in Casey and Tuggeranong, that means the community can soon look forward to better local facilities north and south.”
