ACT Police are concerned for vehicles on our roads putting the safety of its occupants and other road users at risk.

They said bald tyres, obstructed windscreens and broken lights all pose a risk to road users.   

Vehicles on the road in the ACT may be subject to a random inspection at any time from Police.

This includes unoccupied or occupied vehicles in car parks and other road related areas.  

If a fault is identified by Police, a major or minor defect notice or a warning notice may be issued.  

Key issues for drivers to look out for include:  

• Tyre condition and inflation pressures are within range 
• Check windscreen for cracks and chips, wiper blade condition and washer water levels 
• Ensure you don’t have any illegal modifications
• Seatbelts and fitted baby capsules’ condition
• Vehicle lights are working, including indicators 
• Trailers & caravans have a number plate clearly displayed on them and their lights are operational 
• Ensure that bike racks are not obstructing number plates and lights
• Correctly displaying “L” and “P” plates
• Removing ice on windscreens before driving
• Ensuring that vehicles have no obstructed vision points
• Checking current registration status including expiry dates

ACT Policing said roadworthy checks are required to ensure the safety of all Canberrans on our roads and it’s important to take the time to check your vehicle.

If you are not confident with vehicles, many ACT mechanics will do a check for you for free or a small fee.  

Police would also like to remind Canberrans to check their current registration status and ensure that all personal details are up to date.
