The Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) returns to Llewellyn Hall on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 July to present special performances of Handel’s iconic Messiah. The most performed piece of classical music worldwide, Messiah is characterised by choral writing of extraordinary power and drama, epitomised in the famous Hallelujah chorus.
“Handel’s great gift to us is the humanity of his music,” said guest conductor Anthony Hunt, who makes his CSO debut on the podium. A pianist, organist and conductor, Hunt is the Head of Music and Chorus Master at the State Opera of South Australia.
“Messiah has this wonderful sense of being ‘for the people’,” he said, “it’s impossible not to be swept up in it.” The CSO is joined onstage by accomplished guest artists Chloe Lankshear (Soprano), Tobias Cole (Countertenor), Andrew Goodwin (Tenor) and Adrian Tamburini.
Goodwin recently appeared in Music for Ukraine, a collaborative fundraiser of the CSO, the Canberra International Music Festival and the ANU School of Music. Tamburini joined the CSO onstage in 2021 for Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, conducted by Jessica Cottis.
One of Australia’s leading countertenors and a mainstay of the Canberra arts scene, Cole will also prepare the CSO Messiah Choir, comprising vocalists from the ANU Chamber Choir, which Cole directs, with guests from other ensembles.
