A stoppage time penalty goal was all that separated Canberra United and Melbourne City after a closely fought contest in Canberra on Sunday 24 November.
Scoreless at half-time, the action kicked up a notch in the second half with United first to score. A long-range effort from Camila struck the post with the rebound falling kindly for Katie Stengel to slot it home.
City returned fire almost immediately throughMilica Mijatovic, who latched onto a lovely ball through United’s defensive line and deftly evaded goalkeeper Sham Khamis to score.
It was an even battle for the remainder of the game until City launched a late attack which resulted in a penalty to the visitors after a clumsy challenge in the goal box.
While Khamis correctly guessed Emily van Egmond’s penalty kick she was unable to get enough glove to ball to keep it out of the net with City claiming a 2-1 win in front of a crowd of 1,293 at McKellar Park.
United’s next match is away against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday 30 November before returning home for a match against Brisbane Roar at McKellar Park on Thursday 5 December 7.30pm.
