CAVS SPLIT SERIES
The Canberra Cavalry have been forced to share the honours with the Melbourne Aces after the visitors fought back from 2-0 down to level the series in week one of ABL action. The Cavalry had an ideal start to the series, winning 8-4 on Thursday 21 November and 7-2 on Friday 22 November before the Aces fought back for decisive victories on the weekend, winning 10-2 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. The Cavalry player of the series was Cam Warner, who went 9-12 from the bat boasting a batting average of .750 which included a home run on opening day, while Cavalry veteran Kyle Perkins equalled the Cavs’ all-time home run record, hitting home runs 19 and 20 both on the Friday night. The Cavalry take on the Perth Heat in an away series from 29 November to 1 December.
CAPS TAME LYNX
The UC Capitals defeated the Perth Lynx on Sunday 24 November as the WNBL returned from the FIBA break. An even contest throughout, the Lynx led 54-52 heading into the final quarter before fading out as the Caps claimed an 84-66 victory. The UC Capitals host Townsville Fire at the National Convention Centre on Saturday 30 November 5.05pm.
In other news, the UC Capitals and Basketball ACT will highlight the elite female basketball pathway with a renewed partnership that will see players more involved at the grassroots level. Through the Club Ambassador Program, each Canberra club will be allocated a UC Capitals player each WNBL season to be involved in certain events and training sessions to help inspire young basketballers to stay involved in the sport.

The Disability Trust’s Score Raiders will host the inaugural Score Raiders International Day of People with Disability Event on Saturday 30 November 2-5pm at Raiders Belconnen, Hardwick Crescent, Holt. FEMALES IN FLIGHT
Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) are hosting a free photographic exhibition featuring women in sport. An initiative of national advocacy body, Women Sport Australia, the Women in Sport Photo Action Awards Exhibition (#WISPAA Exhibition) includes 30 stunning images of female athletes in full flight – including the iconic image of AFL Women’s star Tayla Harris. Women Sport Australiadirector Louise Evans created #WISPAA to help change media and public perceptions and the portrayal of women in sport. The exhibition will be held in the Marathon Room at the AIS Visitor Centre, Canberra to 8 December. The AIS Visitor Centre is open 8.30am-5pm weekdays and 9.30am-4pm weekends.
CBR SPROT AWARDS
The Canberra’s People’s Sporting Champion voting prize winner and the CBR Sport Awards Minister’s Awards finalists for Innovation (Triathlon ACT – Young Women Leadership Program, Capital Football – Walking Football, Tennis ACT – Various Initiatives), Inclusion (Canberra Region Rugby League – The Score Raiders Program, Table Tennis ACT – Diversity and Inclusion, Royal Life Saving ACT – Swim My Way) and Event Excellence (Table Tennis ACT – 2019 ACT Open, Dragon Boat ACT – 2019 Australian Dragon Boat Championships, Cricket ACT – Canberra South Cross Kookaburra Cup) have been announced ahead of the CBR Sports Awards ceremony on 29 November. As part of the People’s Sporting Champion vote, community members were asked to nominate their favourite club or school to be in a draw to win $5,000, which was randomly won by Canberra Croquet Club; cbrsportawards.com.au
ROSS CLAIMS PARA_ATHLETE HONOURS
Kathryn Ross was recently named Para-Athlete of the Year at the Rower of the Year Awards. She said: “I didn’t expect to win tonight, it’s been a wonderful journey since returning to the sport. I’m really grateful for all the support I’ve received from my coach and the whole community behind our sport.”
NEW HOCKEY ACT CEO
The Board of Hockey ACT have formally appointed Rob Sheekey as CEO of Hockey ACT. Sheekey has worked at Hockey ACT in various capacities since 2003, including the roles of general manager and interim CEO.
