Before and after: Bedroom bliss

Bedrooms are the ideal space to reset and relax. If you’re looking to create a serene retreat, why not take some inspiration from interior stylist Jono Fleming who recently updated the bedroom at his farm in rural NSW.

The key to pulling this look together was to let certain colours shine and the rest to sit quietly and complement them. The teal on the walls and the ochre of the bedhead and pillows pair perfectly together; the neutrals and navy tones then act as support to these colours.

Here Jono explains how he created his bedroom bliss:

  • To enhance the views of the pine forest outside, I chose a darker colour for the walls, the deep moody teal. It makes the room feel cosy, an escape no matter what time of the year.
  • The wall colour dictated a lot of choices from the ground up, such as the navy striped rug to not only complement the teal but also give the room a nice textural feeling underfoot.
  • I splurged on a custom bedhead by Heatherly Design to anchor the room. It was curved at the corners to accommodate the fixed handblown glass wall lights (by Articolo) that couldn’t be moved. I chose an upholstered fabric in a painterly mustard weave to contrast the teal walls and enhance the stripes that featured on other soft furnishings.
  • I layered the soft linen bedding with velvet pillowcases so the bed looks plush. Each night it feels like a holiday at home!
  • All the cushions in the farmhouse were handmade by my mum! She sewed over 100 cushions in total by scouring fabric remnant stores for textural fabrics with faint lines in neutral colours. She then made them up into amazing cushions.
  • Bedside tables selected are classic, not too fussy and timeless whilst the black helps them disappear.
  • I chose a Kara Rosenlund print to help tie all the moody colours together whilst the pops of yellow connect to the bedhead. Kara’s work is pure storytelling and she has such a way of transporting you to a moment and a mood.
  • For small décor ideas, I love using sculptural vases, the Roman head from H&M home is paired with the stumpy vase from Clay Canoe. These pieces sit in contrast with each other but don’t clash.
