NDIS in Canberra feature

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a federal government scheme that helps to fund costs associated with disability. By 2026, the NDIS is expected to provide around 500,000 Australians, aged under 65, who have permanent and significant disability, with funding for supports and services. Read on to find out how the advertisers in this special NDIS feature can assist people with disability and their carers in the ACT region.

Jigsaw provides real-world experience of work

Twenty-nine-year-old Bradly – a trainee at Jigsaw – has always wanted to work. However, until recently, he could only access traditional ‘disability day programs’ – despite leaving school 11 years ago. Bradly’s legal guardian believes his blindness has been an ‘issue’ for many employment programs and, sadly, his story is not uncommon.

Jigsaw is a social enterprise founded on the idea that the best way to prepare people for work is through the real-world experience of work.

“People with disability first gain skills and training, then are employed at award wage in our commercial business,” explains Paul Brown, Jigsaw CEO. “After that, we support them in their transition to open employment in the right role with the right employer.”

It’s a model that’s working. “Since we started in 2014, 91 per cent of people employed, or transitioned into employment, by Jigsaw retain their employment to this day,” he says of having supported over 750 people across four hubs in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide, with plans for a Canberra hub to open in October.

With a focus on school leavers (those aged 16-29 years), Jigsaw is giving young people with disability, like Bradly, a chance at a financially stable and socially inclusive future.

Fragile X Association advocates for increased testing

Fragile X syndrome is frequently under-recognised and often misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and care, but recent medical advancements offer new hope to affected families.

Fragile X syndrome is the leading cause of inherited developmental disability, affecting approximately one in 5,000 people.

This lifelong condition causes developmental disability and learning difficulties, speech delays, ADHD, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, and autistic-like behaviours.

“Recent developments mean far more Australians can be tested to see if they are carriers of Fragile X, including testing for women prior to pregnancy,” says Executive Director of Fragile X Association of Australia, Wendy Bruce.

“Moreover, the expansion of genetic carrier testing covered by Medicare from late 2023 will lift the financial burden off families.”

Fragile X Association of Australia is advocating right now for the inclusion of Fragile X syndrome in the expansion of newborn bloodspot screening.

They also give you a chance to reflect on where you started, the challenges you have had to overcome. And more importantly, on what you have achieved.

For Hartley Lifecare, their throwback is now 60 years in the making; 60 years of high quality, person-centred supports for those in our Canberra Community living with a disability.

Originally established as a learning facility and therapy support service for children and adults, Hartley has grown extensively to now support clients in over 35 homes across the Canberra region.

Although a lot has changed in six decades, what hasn’t changed is the commitment, respect and compassion Hartley Lifecare demonstrate every day to the people they support.
