Greasy’s not monkeying around about art in Canberra

In an Australian first, one of the Capital’s favourite burger joints Grease Monkey has today, Tuesday 13 September, announced their very own GreasyBalds Art Prize. The competition hopes to lure local illustrators, designers and underground artists from around the Canberra region to participate in creating a work of art.

In a competition that is sure to send creatives bananas with ideas, entrants are invited to take inspiration from the Grease Monkey brand. Think Monkeys, burgers, pizzas, beers, the vibes, the locale, or anything from the menu and social media.

Playing on the prestigious Archibald Prize portraiture art award, the GreasyBalds Art Prize encourages artists to use any medium they are confident working in. Owner of Grease Monkey, Nick Tuckwell, is encouraging artists to take inspiration from the brand and create 2D, 3D or digital art. Tuckwell says the brand has always been interested in connecting with real locals in the Canberra community.

“We’re hoping to connect with as many local Canberra artists as we can. There’s just so much talent out there when it comes to art, and we want to see as much of it as possible,” Tuckwell says.

The work that impresses the most will take home a cash prize of $3,000, while a minor prize will pocket $1,500, and the runner up will be awarded $750.

The winners are set to be decided by a panel of people integrated in the Canberra art and food scenes. Judging the GreasyBalds is ACT Minister for the Arts Tara Cheyne; James Manning artist and CX designer; local food critic Chris Hansen; and, of course, Nick Tuckwell, owner of Grease Monkey.

Any medium is welcome; anything that can’t be submitted digitally must include a maximum of four photos to showcase the work and how it incorporates the Grease Monkey energy.

Applications close 16 October with winners to be announced at a special event on 27 October.
