Two new dog parks and playgrounds, to be built as part of the ACT Government’s suburban infrastructure program, are open for consultation before construction starts next year.
“We’re building two new fenced dog parks in Franklin and the Lanyon Valley to make sure more Canberrans in the north and south of Canberra have more places to play with their best friend,” said Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Transport and City Services.
Canberra has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the country, and Canberrans want more places they can bring their dog and spend time with other dog owners, Mr Steel said.
Lanyon dog park, on the corner of Jim Pike Avenue and Woodcock Drive in Gordon, will feature native trees, dog agility areas, grassed areas, a picnic shelter, drinking fountains, and seats.
Franklin dog park, on the corner of Nullarbor Avenue and Oodgeroo Avenue, will feature a gravel area for coffee van, a picnic shelter, seats, drinking fountains, a dog agility area with natural elements, grassed areas, and deciduous trees.
The government will also upgrade playgrounds in Kaleen and Lyons. Possible features could include fences, a shade sail, a picnic shelter, bike racks, shade trees, and mixed use courts.
Mr Steel said the government wants to make sure families have access to high quality playgrounds in their suburb that support children’s health and wellbeing.
He expected work to begin next year, following feedback from locals.
This investment follows the completion of local shop upgrades in Kaleen; work is underway at local shops in Duffy and Campbell.
